I just started using this program in place of photoshop cs2, but I'm having some trouble. I'd like to turn off the box that describes the tool I've currently selected that hovers right next to my mouse pointer, but I can't find an option for it. Is that possible?

Yes, it is. Menu > View > Drawing Tool-Tips

This is so annoying to the drawing experience, john, don't see drawing tips under view in menu in order to switch this hovering text box off. hang on .....
View>Workspace>show tool tips while drawing, to switch off. Sorry to bother you, great achievement
