Image background transparency

I am trying to make background in image truly transparent so that when the image is posted on a website, the background of the image takes on the color of the webpage background. I have tried the "background erase tool" and the "erase tool" which does a nice job. However the image background is white and not truly transparent. Is true transparency possible or is there a way to choose a background color based on the HEX code of the color so I can match the website background color?

Save your image as a .png file. jpeg always puts a white background. See my test picture.

I did a screen shot of this web page to use as background on the .png file.
