How do you make images/graphics transparent?

Hi,
I too have a need to save gif images with a transparent background and would appreciate some help and/or advice.

Duplicate the image you need a transparent background version of and erase the background. To save your image as a portable version with transparent background make it the background layer and move other layers away from it. Save your work then save as .png to keep a portible transparent background version version. It can then be loaded into an animation project for use in .gif file.
