Remove background and insert object into another picture.

Has anyone removed a background and inserted the object into another picture?  If so, would you mind sharing how you did this step by step.  I have accomplished this in GIMP but I am looking for a program much simpler than GIMP that I can do this in.  My photo editing experience has been limited to 1) brightness, 2) contrast, 3) cropping, 4) red eye removal, 5) resizing.  So you can see my experience is very limited.  Any and all replies will be much appreciated and I would thank you in advance.
